NZeTA Renewal: What Happens When It Expires?

Has your New Zealand NZeTA expired, or is it about to expire before your next trip? You cannot simply travel using an expired NZeTA.

For most travellers, an NZeTA is valid for 2 years from the date it is issued. Once it expires, you generally need to submit a new NZeTA request if you still need one for your journey to New Zealand.

What Happens When Your NZeTA Expires?

An NZeTA does not automatically renew when its validity period ends. A traveller must hold a valid NZeTA when required to board a flight, cruise ship, or cargo ship travelling to New Zealand.

For example, imagine you received your NZeTA in October 2024 and plan to visit New Zealand in November 2026. Your previous NZeTA may no longer be valid for that trip.

In this situation, you should check your NZeTA status and request a new one before travelling if you are required to have an NZeTA.

How Long Is an NZeTA Valid?

The standard validity periods are:

Traveller type

NZeTA validity

Most travellers

2 years

Airline or other eligible crew

5 years

The validity period begins from the date the NZeTA is issued.

An NZeTA can normally be used for multiple trips during its validity period. However, each visit must still meet the applicable New Zealand entry and stay requirements.

Is NZeTA Renewal the Same as Applying Again?

In everyday travel language, people often call it NZeTA renewal. However, when your NZeTA has expired, you generally need to make a new NZeTA request rather than extend the expired authorization.

The important thing is to make sure you have a valid NZeTA before travelling if your nationality and travel circumstances require one.

If you are ready to submit a new request, you can use the New Zealand ETA application page.

When Should You Renew Your NZeTA?

There is no need to replace a valid NZeTA simply because you have travelled to New Zealand before. If your NZeTA is still valid, you may be able to use it for multiple trips.

However, check its validity before every planned journey.

Immigration New Zealand states that NZeTA requests should be allowed up to 72 hours for processing. Because processing can take time, it is sensible to apply well before your departure date rather than waiting until the last minute.

You can also learn more about expected processing times in our guide to how long a New Zealand ETA takes to process.

A Simple Example

Suppose you are travelling from the USA to New Zealand in December 2026.

Your NZeTA was issued in September 2024. Since the normal validity period is two years, you should not assume that the old NZeTA will still be valid for your December trip.

Instead:

  1. Check when your existing NZeTA was issued.

  2. Confirm whether it is still valid.

  3. If it has expired, submit a new NZeTA request.

  4. Allow up to 72 hours for processing.

  5. Travel with the passport connected to your valid NZeTA.

What If Your Passport Has Changed?

A passport change is important because your NZeTA details need to match the passport you will use for travel.

Immigration New Zealand provides a process for updating passport details, including a new passport number or passport expiry date. The information on your NZeTA must match the passport you use when travelling.

If your passport has been replaced, lost, stolen, or your name has changed, check whether your existing NZeTA can be updated or whether you need to submit a new request.

A change in nationality cannot simply be handled through the passport-detail update process. Immigration New Zealand says that if you need to change the nationality on your passport, you must submit a new NZeTA request.

NZeTA Renewal vs. Applying for a New NZeTA

Understanding the difference can prevent last-minute travel problems.

Situation

What you may need to do

NZeTA is still valid

You may use it for multiple eligible trips

NZeTA has expired

Submit a new NZeTA request if one is required

New passport

Update passport details or make a new request depending on the circumstances

Nationality has changed

Submit a new NZeTA request

Small spelling/detail error

Use the appropriate NZeTA change process

Travelling after expiry

Make sure you have a valid NZeTA before travel if required

Immigration New Zealand specifically allows certain passport, name, email and minor-error changes through its NZeTA change process. Significant changes may require a new request.

Does an Expired NZeTA Mean You Need a New Visa?

An NZeTA and a New Zealand visa are different things. Whether you need an NZeTA, a visa, or another travel authorization depends on factors such as your passport, how you are travelling and the purpose of your trip.

For eligible visa-waiver travellers, an NZeTA can allow travel to New Zealand without applying for a visa first. It does not, however, guarantee entry into New Zealand.

When you arrive, you still need to meet the relevant entry requirements.

Can You Travel With an Expired NZeTA?

You should not rely on an expired NZeTA for travel.

An NZeTA ceases to be valid when it expires. If you are required to hold one, make sure your new request has been approved before travelling.

Airlines and other carriers may check whether you have the required travel authorization before boarding. Immigration New Zealand also advises travellers to make sure their travel documents are valid before departure.

This is especially important if your departure date is close to the expiry date of your current NZeTA.

What Else Should You Check Before Your New Zealand Trip?

NZeTA renewal is only one part of your travel preparation.

Before departure, check:

  • Your NZeTA validity.

  • Your passport details.

  • Your passport validity.

  • Your eligibility to travel with an NZeTA.

  • Your onward or return travel arrangements.

  • Any applicable entry requirements.

  • Your NZeTA confirmation email.

For visa-waiver travellers, New Zealand requires the passport to generally remain valid for at least three months after the planned departure from New Zealand.

How to Apply for an NZeTA After It Expires

If your NZeTA has expired and you need one for an upcoming trip, the process is straightforward:

Confirm that your passport and travel circumstances make you eligible for an NZeTA.

Step 2: Prepare Your Details

Have your current passport information and required personal details ready.

Step 3: Submit a New Request

Complete the NZeTA application with accurate information. You can start your application through our New Zealand ETA application page.

Step 4: Allow Processing Time

Immigration New Zealand advises travellers to allow up to 72 hours for an NZeTA request to be processed.

Step 5: Check Your Confirmation
