eTA New Zealand For Chile Citizens

Complete guide to the New Zealand eTA for Chilean citizens — eligibility, required documents, processing time and how to apply online from Chile.

Since 1 October 2019, Chilean citizens must hold an approved New Zealand eTA (NZeTA) before travelling to New Zealand. As one of the 60 visa waiver countries, Chile enjoys visa-free travel for short stays of up to 90 days — the eTA is a quick online travel authorization, not a visa, and most applications are approved within about 10 minutes.

For Chilean travellers, New Zealand is a Pacific neighbour with a familiar spine of mountains — the Southern Alps mirroring the Andes, fiords echoing Patagonia — plus geothermal country, wine regions and shared southern seasons that make trip planning easy.

Do Chilean Citizens Need An eTA For New Zealand?

Yes. Chilean passport holders do not need a visa for visits of up to 90 days, but every traveller from Chile — including children and infants — must obtain an approved NZeTA before departure. Once approved, the eTA is linked electronically to your passport, which removes the need for embassy appointments and passport stamps: airlines verify it at check-in and New Zealand border officials confirm it on arrival.

The requirement applies to every way of entering the country. Cruise passengers need a valid NZeTA just like travellers arriving by air, and Chilean citizens transiting through Auckland International Airport to a destination outside New Zealand also need one, even if they never leave the transit area. Crew members of airlines and cruise lines need a separate crew eTA arranged with their employer.

Families travelling together must provide the passport details of every member and submit an individual NZeTA application for each traveller, including minors.

New Zealand eTA Requirements For Chilean Citizens

The NZeTA requirements for Chile are simple. Before starting the online application, make sure you have:

  • A Chilean passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand
  • A valid credit or debit card to pay the application fee and the IVL tourist levy online
  • A current email address where your approved eTA will be delivered as a PDF
  • Dual citizens must apply with the passport they will travel on — the eTA is electronically linked to that specific passport

Accuracy matters: every detail must match your passport exactly. Incorrect or incomplete information is the most common cause of delays and can lead to rejection.

How To Apply For The NZeTA From Chile

Chilean citizens can complete the online NZeTA application from a smartphone, computer or tablet in about 10 minutes — from home or the office, with no embassy visit:

  • Fill In The Online Form

Provide your personal details (full name, date of birth, address), passport details (number, nationality, expiry date), travel plans (arrival and departure dates, accommodation) and short health and character declarations.

  • Pay The Fee & IVL

Pay the application fee together with the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) — New Zealand's contribution toward protecting its natural environment and tourism infrastructure — using a credit or debit card.

  • Receive Your eTA By Email

Your approved NZeTA arrives as a PDF at the email address you provided and is linked electronically to your Chilean passport. Carry a printout with your passport when you travel.

Processing Time & Validity Of The NZeTA From Chile

Most NZeTA applications from Chile are approved within about 10 minutes; in some cases additional checks can take up to 72 hours. Apply at least 3 working days before departure to leave comfortable time for processing.

Once granted, the eTA is valid for 2 years — or until your passport expires, whichever comes first — and can be used for multiple trips to New Zealand with stays of up to 90 days each. If you renew your Chilean passport, you will need a new eTA linked to the new passport, and dual nationals must always travel on the passport used in the application.
